A thousand words in a picture

I’ve been taking photographs since I was a teenager, though I’m a journalist by training and my photography is mainly editorial. But I like to pick and choose work that interests me and I find that taking a variety of pictures helps to keep me on my toes.
People say that a picture is worth a thousand words and I certainly think that the right photograph can communicate a whole story about a person or an event. I like to take the time to talk with people, to find out what’s important to them and then to devise a picture that will capture that.
Coming from an editorial background, my style tends towards photojournalism. I aim for a natural approach, though sometimes this means directing events and posing people to get the right look. I aim to use natural light where I can, though I won’t hesitate to set up flashlights when necessary. But mainly I like to take a fluid, freewheeling approach so that everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.
